9. Designate Special Agents for Supervising Offenders
in Treatment Programs

To become partners in recidivism reduction, the probation and/or criminal justice staff must understand the treatment process and support treatment goals. This requires a close working relationship between the treatment and criminal justice staff. The team process in a seamless system relies on the staff to be considerate and supportive of the roles and needs of each discipline.

Supervision involves a number of functions that can improve the integrity of the treatment process, if used properly. These components include:

  • drug testing (to confirm abstinence),
  • collateral contacts (to identify potential problems in the community),
  • curfews (to limit restrictions),
  • face-to-face contacts (to observe and discuss treatment progress and compliance with general court conditions),
  • and community service (to help repay society for the crime and to fulfill sentence obligations).
The leverage of the criminal justice system can be used to modify conditions of the sentence for offenders having difficulty.
